Superficially it would strike us as incomprehensible that even the most untutored mind could have supposed that the food so thoughtfully provided was actually consumed by the departed shade, in view of the fact that it still remained to moulder on the grave. We must also remember the important fact that food has been offered from the earliest times at the grave, for the sustenance of the dead in their spiritual state.
